About Daewoo Chairman
The Daewoo Chairman was a full-size luxury sedan positioned above the Leganza and other passenger cars in Daewoo’s range. It originated as a SsangYong model in 1997 and joined the Daewoo line after Daewoo acquired SsangYong in 1998. The Daewoo-badged version was offered in South Korea and selected export markets around the turn of the century.
Designed as a flagship executive car, the Chairman used rear-wheel drive and Mercedes-Benz-derived engineering developed under a technical licensing agreement. Its traditional three-box body, long wheelbase and comfort-oriented cabin placed greater emphasis on rear-seat passengers than Daewoo’s mainstream saloons.
The main versions included the CM400S, CM500S and CM600S, along with the extended-wheelbase CM600L limousine. Depending on specification, petrol engines included a 2.3-litre four-cylinder and 2.8- or 3.2-litre inline-six units, generally paired with an automatic transmission.
Only the original Chairman generation carried Daewoo branding. The model later continued under SsangYong, receiving extensive updates before the separate Chairman W generation appeared in 2008. The Daewoo Chairman is chiefly known as an uncommon Korean luxury flagship with spacious accommodation, formal styling and mechanical links to Mercedes-Benz.
