About Chrysler Viper
The Chrysler Viper was the name used for versions of the American Dodge Viper sold in parts of Europe, including France. Developed as a high-performance flagship, it entered production for the 1992 model year and remained a specialised, low-volume model until production ended on 31 August 2017, with interruptions between generations.
The Viper is a two-seat, rear-wheel-drive sports car built around a large naturally aspirated V10 engine and a manual transmission. Its long bonnet, wide body and driver-focused layout gave it a distinctive position among contemporary performance cars. Unlike Chrysler’s mainstream saloons and family vehicles, it served as a halo model intended to demonstrate the group’s engineering and motorsport capabilities.
Five generations were produced. Early cars included the open RT/10 roadster and the GTS coupé, followed by redesigned SRT-10 roadster and coupé variants. The final generation was initially marketed under the SRT brand in the United States before returning to Dodge. Track-oriented ACR models added more aggressive aerodynamics and chassis tuning, while GTS-R competition cars achieved notable international racing success.
The Viper is chiefly known for its dramatic styling, substantial V10 performance and relatively direct driving character. It occupied an unusual market position as an American alternative to European exotic sports cars and remains one of the most recognisable performance models associated with the Chrysler group.
