About Chrysler Valiant
The Chrysler Valiant was a major part of Chrysler Australia’s range from 1962 to 1981. Derived initially from the North American Valiant, it developed into an increasingly Australian-designed and manufactured large family car suited to local roads and customer preferences. It competed in the mainstream market against models from Holden and Ford.
Early R and S Series cars were followed by the locally manufactured AP5 and AP6. Later series included the VC, VE, VF, VG, VH, VJ, VK, CL and final CM. Although styling, dimensions and equipment changed substantially, the Valiant retained a conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout throughout its production life.
The range covered sedans, Safari station wagons, Wayfarer utilities and two-door hardtops or coupes, depending on the series. Versions ranged from basic family and commercial models to better-equipped Regal and VIP variants. The Pacer provided a sportier six-cylinder option, while the related Valiant Charger became the best-known performance-focused body style.
Valiants were offered with Chrysler’s durable Slant Six, Australian-built Hemi six-cylinder engines and several V8 options. The model is particularly known for spacious interiors, strong engines, distinctive styling and a broad range that combined everyday transport, utility, luxury and performance roles.
