About Chrysler Spirit
The Chrysler Spirit was a front-wheel-drive, four-door midsize sedan sold mainly in Mexico from 1991 to 1995. It was also exported to Argentina and Brazil during part of its production run. Although closely related to the Dodge Spirit offered in North America, these vehicles carried Chrysler branding to suit regional market strategy.
Built in Toluca, Mexico, the Spirit used Chrysler’s AA platform, an extended development of the company’s K-car architecture. It shared its basic structure with the Plymouth Acclaim and Chrysler LeBaron sedan. The model occupied a practical middle position in Chrysler’s local range, combining family-car space and conventional three-box styling with equipment intended for business and private buyers.
The Chrysler Spirit remained within a single generation, receiving detail and equipment changes rather than a full redesign. The mainstream version used a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with multipoint fuel injection. More distinctive R/T variants added turbocharged performance. Mexico offered both a 2.5-litre turbo model with an automatic transmission and, for a shorter period, an R/T DOHC with a 2.2-litre 16-valve turbo engine and five-speed manual gearbox.
The Spirit is chiefly known for its roomy, straightforward sedan format and the unusual contrast between ordinary versions and the much rarer performance-focused R/T models.
