About Chrysler Shadow
The Chrysler Shadow was the Mexican-market version of Chrysler Corporation’s P-platform compact car, closely related to the Dodge Shadow and Plymouth Sundance sold elsewhere. Introduced in Mexico for 1989 and built at Chrysler’s Toluca plant, it remained in production through 1994. It occupied the affordable compact end of Chrysler de México’s passenger-car range, below larger models such as the Spirit and Phantom.
Despite its saloon-like profile, the Shadow featured a practical rear hatch. It was offered in two- and four-door forms, while a two-door convertible joined the range in the early 1990s. All versions used a transverse-engine, front-wheel-drive layout suited to everyday urban and family use.
The Shadow covered one generation, receiving equipment and styling updates rather than a complete redesign. Mexican variations included basic, Típico and better-equipped trims, as well as the sportier GTS. Naturally aspirated four-cylinder models served mainstream buyers, while turbocharged versions added a stronger performance character. Manual and automatic transmissions were available, depending on model and year.
The model is known for compact dimensions, useful hatchback versatility and straightforward mechanical packaging. GTS, turbo and convertible examples are its most distinctive versions. The Shadow filled Chrysler’s need for an accessible compact car until the Neon succeeded it in 1994.
