About Chrysler Prowler
The Chrysler Prowler is a two-seat, rear-wheel-drive roadster known for translating American hot-rod styling into a factory-built production car. Its long nose, tapered body, separate front fenders and large rear wheels closely followed the appearance of the original 1993 concept. The model debuted under the Plymouth brand for 1997, returned for 1999 and became a Chrysler during the 2001 model year after Plymouth was discontinued. Production ended in February 2002.
Built in Detroit alongside the Dodge Viper, the Prowler was offered in a single generation. Chrysler-badged cars used a 3.5-litre V6 with a four-speed AutoStick automatic transmission and a rear-mounted transaxle. Extensive use of aluminium in the frame, body and suspension made the car notable as both a design statement and a showcase for new manufacturing methods.
The Chrysler version changed little mechanically during its short run. Variations mainly involved colours and limited editions, including the blue Mulholland Edition and the final Deep Candy Red cars. A colour-matched luggage trailer was also available to offset the roadster’s limited storage space.
Within Chrysler’s range, the Prowler served as a low-volume image model rather than a conventional sports car. It remains distinctive for its concept-car appearance, unusual engineering and rare combination of retro design with late-1990s technology.
