About Chrysler Newport
The Chrysler Newport is best known as the brand’s entry-level full-size car of the 1960s and 1970s. Chrysler first applied the name to a limited-production 1940 show car, then used Newport for hardtop body styles during the 1950s. It became a standalone model for 1961 and remained in the range through 1981.
Within the Chrysler lineup, the Newport generally sat below the 300 and New Yorker. It offered comparable large-car space and comfort with simpler trim and a lower price. Most versions combined a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with V8 power, reflecting the priorities of American full-size cars of the period.
The principal production eras were the 1961–1964 models, C-body generations introduced for 1965, 1969 and 1974, and the downsized R-body sedan sold from 1979 to 1981. Styling ranged from distinctive early-1960s forms to the broad “fuselage” design of 1969–1973 and the more formal appearance of later cars.
Depending on the year, the range included two- and four-door sedans, pillarless hardtops, convertibles and station wagons. The wagon left the Newport series when Town & Country became a separate line for 1965, while the final generation was offered only as a four-door sedan. The Newport Custom provided a better-equipped variation. The model is chiefly associated with roomy cabins, relaxed cruising and accessible Chrysler luxury.
