About Chrysler Laser

The Chrysler Laser was a front-wheel-drive, three-door hatchback coupe sold for the 1984 through 1986 model years. Developed during Chrysler’s move towards compact front-wheel-drive vehicles, it used the G platform, an extended derivative of the company’s K-car architecture, and was closely related to the Dodge Daytona.

Only one generation was produced. The Laser occupied a more refined position than its Dodge counterpart, combining sports-coupe styling with the equipment and presentation associated with the Chrysler brand. Its low, aerodynamic profile, large rear hatch and 2+2 cabin provided a balance of sporty design and everyday practicality.

The range included base and XE models, with the performance-focused XT added during 1985. Depending on year and specification, power came from naturally aspirated or turbocharged 2.2-litre four-cylinder engines. A naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder was also available for 1986. Manual and automatic transmissions were offered.

The Laser is known for bringing a modern sport coupe to Chrysler’s otherwise luxury-oriented 1980s range. Available features included digital instruments, electronic trip information, voice alerts, leather seating and turbocharged power. Its short production run and single-generation format make it a relatively uncommon example of Chrysler’s early front-wheel-drive performance era.
