About Chrysler Lancer

The Chrysler Lancer was a compact, rear-wheel-drive car sold in Australia from 1974 into 1981. It was derived from Mitsubishi designs and supplied through Chrysler’s growing relationship with the Japanese manufacturer. The model gave Chrysler a smaller and more economical offering beneath the Galant and the brand’s much larger Valiant range.

The range progressed through LA, LB and LC series rather than distinct generations. Early LA models were two- and four-door sedans with a 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine, including EL and GL versions. The updated LB range continued the sedan and added a sportier three-door hatchback, also called a liftback, with a 1.6-litre engine. For the LC series introduced in 1979, the line was reduced to the liftback and received revised exterior details, cabin updates and a five-speed manual gearbox.

The Lancer is known for straightforward engineering, light dimensions and practical small-car packaging. Sedan versions served as conventional everyday transport, while the sloping-roof liftback brought a more distinctive and youthful character. Its market position reflected Chrysler Australia’s need for competitive compact cars during the 1970s, while its Mitsubishi origins foreshadowed the later transition of the Lancer name to Mitsubishi branding.
