The Chrysler Imperial was introduced in 1926 as Chrysler’s flagship luxury car. Positioned above the brand’s regular models, it competed in the premium American market with an emphasis on generous dimensions, passenger comfort, substantial engineering and formal styling.
Chrysler-badged Imperials were produced through 1954 across six successive generations. Early ranges included roadsters, coupes, sedans, convertibles, limousines and chassis intended for specialist coachwork. Power evolved from six-cylinder engines to straight-eights and, in the final years of this period, V8s.
Imperial became a separate marque for 1955 rather than a Chrysler model. The Chrysler Imperial name returned for the 1990–1993 model years in a seventh generation. This version was a front-wheel-drive, four-door luxury sedan related to the New Yorker but positioned at the top of Chrysler’s passenger-car range.
