About Chrysler E-Class
The Chrysler E-Class was a mid-size four-door sedan offered for the 1983 and 1984 model years. Its name referred to Chrysler’s E platform and was unrelated to the later Mercedes-Benz naming system. Built in Detroit, it formed part of Chrysler’s early-1980s move towards smaller, more fuel-efficient front-wheel-drive cars.
The E-Class used an extended version of the architecture developed for Chrysler’s compact K-cars. It was closely related to the Dodge 600 and front-wheel-drive Chrysler New Yorker, while offering simpler trim and a lower position than the New Yorker. Within Chrysler’s range, it sat above the smaller LeBaron and below the larger, rear-wheel-drive Fifth Avenue.
Only one generation and one sedan body style were produced. Engine choices included Chrysler’s 2.2-litre four-cylinder and a Mitsubishi-sourced 2.6-litre four-cylinder, both paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. For 1984, a turbocharged 2.2-litre engine became available. Equipment could vary considerably, allowing the car to range from relatively basic to near-New Yorker specification.
Known for its spacious cabin, available six-passenger seating and conservative styling, the E-Class combined traditional Chrysler comfort with modern front-wheel-drive packaging. Its short production run makes it a relatively uncommon member of the wider K-car family. After 1984, its place in Chrysler-Plymouth dealerships was effectively taken by the Plymouth Caravelle.
