About Chrysler Conquest
The Chrysler Conquest was a Japanese-built performance coupe sold for the 1987–1989 model years. It was Chrysler’s version of the Mitsubishi Starion, developed during a period of close cooperation between the two manufacturers. Earlier Conquest models had been marketed through Dodge and Plymouth, but the final three model years carried Chrysler branding.
Built in a single generation, the Conquest was a rear-wheel-drive, three-door 2+2 liftback with a turbocharged 2.6-litre four-cylinder engine. Five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions were offered. Its layout distinguished it from Chrysler’s mainly front-wheel-drive passenger-car range and gave the brand a specialised sports model.
Versions included the narrower LE and technology-focused Technica, while the TSi became the best-known variation. The TSi used an intercooled engine and a wide-body design with pronounced wheel-arch extensions, larger wheels and an assertive stance. Availability varied by model year, with the TSi representing the main later version.
Positioned against Japanese sports coupes such as the Mazda RX-7, Nissan 300ZX and Toyota Supra, the Conquest combined grand-touring comfort with turbocharged performance. It is particularly recognised for its angular 1980s styling, pop-up headlights, rear-drive handling and distinctive wide-body TSi appearance.
