About Chevrolet Volt
The Chevrolet Volt is a compact five-door plug-in hybrid, also described by General Motors as an extended-range electric vehicle. Introduced for the 2011 model year, it combined battery-powered driving with a petrol engine that enabled longer journeys after the usable battery charge was depleted. This format made the Volt suitable for electric daily commuting without relying entirely on charging infrastructure.
Two generations were produced. The first-generation Volt, sold from 2011 to 2015 in the United States, had four seats and a distinctive high-tech cabin. The redesigned second generation arrived for 2016 with five-seat accommodation, a lighter and more efficient drive system, improved performance and a substantially longer electric range. Equipment grades varied by year and market; later US models were mainly offered in LT and Premier trims.
Built primarily at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant, the Volt remained in production through the 2019 model year. It occupied an important position in Chevrolet’s electrified range, bridging conventional hybrids and fully electric cars before the Bolt EV became the brand’s main mass-market electric model. The Volt is especially known for its smooth electric operation, regenerative braking, practical hatchback body and ability to complete many routine trips without using petrol while retaining long-distance flexibility.
