About Chevrolet Swift
The Chevrolet Swift was a compact passenger car sold mainly in Andean South American markets during the 1990s and early 2000s. It was derived from the Suzuki Cultus, also known internationally as the Suzuki Swift, and resulted from the long-running cooperation between General Motors and Suzuki.
Rather than spanning several Chevrolet-developed generations, the model was chiefly a regional version of the second-generation Cultus. In Colombia, it arrived in 1991 and was later assembled by GM Colmotores in Bogotá, remaining available until 2004. Chevrolet-badged versions were also marketed in Ecuador and Venezuela, although specifications and production periods varied by country.
The range included practical hatchback and four-door sedan body styles. Depending on market and year, engines included 1.0-, 1.3- and 1.6-litre units, with manual and selected automatic transmissions. Colombian sedan trims included GL and GLS versions, while the three-door 1.3 GTI provided a distinctly sportier alternative with a twin-cam, 16-valve engine.
Within Chevrolet’s regional line-up, the Swift sat above the smaller Sprint and served buyers seeking an economical, light and straightforward small car. It became known for efficient packaging, simple mechanical design and low running costs, while the GTI gained recognition in local motorsport and among performance enthusiasts.
