About Chevrolet SS
The Chevrolet SS is a full-size, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan sold in the United States for the 2014–2017 model years. It was developed and built in Australia by GM’s Holden division and was closely related to the VF-generation Holden Commodore. The SS returned a V8-powered, rear-wheel-drive four-door to Chevrolet’s US range after a long absence.
Only one generation was offered, exclusively as a four-door sedan. Every SS used a 6.2-litre LS3 V8 producing 415 horsepower. Early cars came with a six-speed automatic transmission, while a six-speed manual became available from the 2015 model year. Later versions received chassis and styling updates, including Magnetic Ride Control, rear Brembo brakes and a revised front design. Differences between model years were mainly equipment, transmission availability, colours and minor design changes rather than separate trim levels.
Positioned as a low-volume performance model, the SS combined the space and comfort of a large five-seat sedan with the power and handling character of a sports car. It is known for its understated appearance, strong naturally aspirated V8, balanced chassis and rare manual-transmission option. Production ended after 2017 as Holden closed its Australian manufacturing operations, leaving the SS without a direct successor in Chevrolet’s range.
