About Chevrolet Sprint

The Chevrolet Sprint was a small, front-wheel-drive hatchback sold in North America during the 1980s. It was Chevrolet’s version of the first-generation Suzuki Cultus, created through General Motors’ partnership with Suzuki and imported from Japan. US sales began for the 1985 model year, initially in western states before wider availability. It served as an economical entry-level Chevrolet and briefly overlapped with the Chevette.

Most Sprints used a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a five-speed manual or, on some versions, a three-speed automatic. The main body style was a three-door hatchback, while the longer five-door Sprint Plus added greater passenger access. Variations included the efficiency-focused Sprint ER and the fuel-injected Sprint Turbo, offered in the United States for 1987 and 1988. Naturally aspirated versions adopted the Sprint Metro name for 1988.

The US-market Sprint covered one Cultus generation from 1985 to 1988, after which its role passed to the Geo Metro. The Sprint name continued longer in Canada on the next Cultus generation, so specifications and body details vary by year and market. The model is chiefly known for its low weight, compact dimensions, simple mechanical layout and strong fuel economy. It occupied the basic, city-oriented end of Chevrolet’s passenger-car range rather than targeting performance or luxury buyers.
