About Chevrolet Spark
The Chevrolet Spark is a compact five-door city car designed mainly for urban travel. It generally served as Chevrolet’s entry-level passenger model, positioned below cars such as the Aveo or Sonic where those vehicles were offered. Its small footprint, front-wheel-drive layout and relatively practical hatchback body made it suitable for crowded roads, short journeys and limited parking spaces.
The model traces its roots to the Daewoo Matiz, introduced in 1998. Following General Motors’ involvement with Daewoo, versions of the car adopted Chevrolet branding in many markets. Across the wider Matiz and Spark lineage, four generations were produced, with major redesigns arriving in 2005, 2009 and 2015. The third-generation model established the Spark name more widely and reached North America for the 2013 model year. Core production was centred in South Korea and ended in 2022.
Specifications varied considerably by country and generation. Most Sparks used small petrol engines with manual, conventional automatic or continuously variable transmissions. Market-specific names included Spark GT and Beat, while a battery-electric Spark EV was sold in selected regions. The model is best known for affordable, straightforward transport, easy manoeuvrability and useful cabin space relative to its exterior size, although performance and luggage capacity were modest compared with larger Chevrolet models.
