About Chevrolet Sail
The Chevrolet Sail is a subcompact passenger car developed mainly for emerging markets. It began in China as the Buick Sail in 2001, using a platform derived from the Opel Corsa B, and adopted Chevrolet branding in 2005. Early versions included four-door sedan and five-door wagon body styles.
A fully redesigned Sail arrived in 2010, developed by the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center for SAIC-GM. This generation expanded the range with sedan and hatchback models and was exported to markets in South America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. In India, it was offered in both body styles with petrol and diesel engines. A limited-production electric derivative, the Sail Springo EV, was also introduced in China.
The third generation, commonly called the Sail 3, debuted in 2014 with a larger body, updated styling and revised petrol powertrains. Although later withdrawn from the Chinese domestic market, the Sail remained significant in several export regions. A fourth-generation sedan and hatchback, related to the newer Chevrolet Aveo, subsequently appeared in selected South American markets.
Within Chevrolet’s range, the Sail has generally occupied an entry-level position below larger compact cars. It is known for compact exterior dimensions, straightforward engineering, practical passenger and luggage space, and versions tailored to local market requirements.
