About Chevrolet Prizm
The Chevrolet Prizm was a compact four-door sedan sold in the United States for the 1998–2002 model years. It continued the Geo Prizm after General Motors phased out the Geo brand. The wider Prizm line covered three generations from 1989, but only the third and final generation carried Chevrolet badging.
Built at the NUMMI joint-venture plant operated by General Motors and Toyota in Fremont, California, the Chevrolet Prizm was closely related to the contemporary Toyota Corolla. It used front-wheel drive and a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine, with manual and automatic transmissions available. Its exterior and trim details distinguished it from the Corolla, while much of the underlying engineering was shared.
The range consisted mainly of base and better-equipped LSi versions. Updates during its production run included the adoption of variable valve timing for 2000. Positioned as an economical entry-level Chevrolet, the Prizm overlapped with the Cavalier but offered a more conservative, Toyota-derived alternative. It is known for straightforward controls, practical sedan packaging, modest running costs and broad parts commonality with the Corolla. Production ended in 2001, with remaining vehicles sold as 2002 models.
