About Chevrolet Opala
The Chevrolet Opala was General Motors do Brasil’s first locally produced passenger car. Introduced in 1968 and built until 1992, it became one of Chevrolet’s defining Brazilian models. Its engineering combined European roots, principally from the Opel Rekord C and Commodore A, with Chevrolet four- and six-cylinder engines in a spacious, rear-wheel-drive platform.
Offered mainly as a four-door saloon and two-door coupé, the range was complemented by the related Caravan estate. The Opala remained one basic generation throughout its long career, but regular styling, equipment and mechanical updates created several distinct phases. Major versions included entry-level models, the more refined Comodoro and Diplomata, and the performance-oriented SS. Engine choices centred on 2.5-litre four-cylinder and 3.8- or 4.1-litre inline-six units, with manual and automatic transmissions available at different times.
Within Chevrolet’s Brazilian line-up, the Opala occupied the upper-medium and executive segment. It appealed to families, professionals and fleet users, while its six-cylinder and luxury variants carried strong status value. The model is particularly known for roomy accommodation, smooth inline-six performance, robust mechanicals and traditional rear-wheel-drive handling. It also became closely associated with Brazilian motorsport, notably Stock Car racing. Production exceeded one million units before the Opala was replaced by the Chevrolet Omega.
