About Chevrolet Nova
The Chevrolet Nova was a compact car positioned below Chevrolet’s larger passenger models. It originated for the 1962 model year as the Nova 400, the upper series in the conventional, economy-focused Chevy II range. Chevrolet dropped the Chevy II name after 1968, making Nova the main model name from 1969.
Four rear-wheel-drive generations were offered through 1979. Depending on the year, the range included two- and four-door saloons, hardtops, estate cars, convertibles and hatchbacks. Engine choices ranged from economical four- and six-cylinder units to small-block and big-block V8s. The Nova SS added a sportier identity, while versions such as the Nova LN and Concours placed greater emphasis on comfort and trim.
The early Nova became known for its straightforward design, practical size and wide variety of configurations. Standard versions served as affordable family transport, while lightweight bodies and available V8 power gave selected models a strong performance reputation. This breadth helped the Nova bridge the gap between basic compact cars and Chevrolet’s larger muscle and family models.
Chevrolet revived the name for a fifth generation from 1985 to 1988. This front-wheel-drive subcompact, built at the GM-Toyota NUMMI plant in California, was related to the Toyota Corolla and offered as a four-door saloon or five-door hatchback. It was replaced in the US market by the Geo Prizm.
