About Chevrolet Monza

The Chevrolet Monza name has been used for several distinct passenger cars rather than one continuous global model line. In North America, the 1975–1980 Monza was a compact, rear-wheel-drive car related to the Chevrolet Vega. It was offered mainly as a 2+2 hatchback and notchback coupe, with four-cylinder, V6 and V8 engines depending on model year. Sport-oriented Spyder versions added distinctive styling and equipment.

In Brazil, the Monza was a separate front-wheel-drive model based on GM’s international “world car” programme. Introduced as a hatchback in 1982, it gained two- and four-door saloon versions and remained in production until 1996. Positioned between the smaller Chevette and larger Opala, it became known as a comfortable, well-equipped family car with an upmarket image. It led Brazil’s overall new-car market for three consecutive years. Notable variations included the Classic and sport-styled S/R, while the 500 EF introduced electronic fuel injection to a Brazilian-built Chevrolet.

The name returned in China in 2019 for a compact four-door saloon. This later Monza is unrelated to the earlier American and Brazilian cars and serves as a mainstream family model, with conventional and sport-themed versions. Across its different regional forms, the Monza is chiefly associated with accessible styling, practical passenger-car packaging and broad engine or trim choice.
