About Chevrolet Monte Carlo
The Chevrolet Monte Carlo is a two-door coupe introduced for 1970 as Chevrolet’s entry in the personal-luxury market. It blended formal styling and comfort with a sportier image than the brand’s mainstream intermediate models. Produced in six generations, it covered the 1970–1988 and 1995–2007 model years, with a break between the two runs.
Early generations used rear-wheel drive and became known for long-bonnet proportions, roomy interiors and available V8 engines. Although downsized over time, the Monte Carlo remained coupe-only. Key variations included the first-generation SS 454, the 1980s Monte Carlo SS and the SS Aerocoupe, which featured bodywork developed for improved racing aerodynamics. These models strengthened the nameplate’s close association with NASCAR.
For 1995, the Monte Carlo returned as a front-wheel-drive coupe using Chevrolet’s contemporary passenger-car architecture. Fifth- and sixth-generation models emphasised everyday comfort and practicality, usually with V6 power, while Z34 and SS versions offered stronger performance and more assertive styling. The final 2006–2007 SS used a V8.
Within Chevrolet’s line-up, the Monte Carlo sat between conventional passenger cars and dedicated sports coupes such as the Camaro. It is remembered for combining distinctive two-door styling, relaxed cruising ability, usable cabin space and recurring performance themes. Production ended after the 2007 model year.
