About Chevrolet Metro
The Chevrolet Metro was a small, economical passenger car sold in North America from the 1998 through 2001 model years. It continued the Geo Metro after General Motors retired the Geo brand and moved the model into the Chevrolet range. Developed through GM’s partnership with Suzuki, it was related to the Suzuki Swift and built by CAMI Automotive in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada.
The Chevrolet-badged Metro represented the final phase of a broader Metro line that had evolved through several generations since 1989. Its design was based on the generation introduced as a Geo for 1995. Chevrolet offered it as a three-door hatchback and four-door sedan, although the 2001 range was reduced to the LSi sedan.
Depending on year and version, the Metro used a 1.0-litre three-cylinder or 1.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, with manual and automatic transmissions available. Base and LSi versions provided different levels of equipment, while the lightweight hatchback was the most basic configuration.
Positioned below the Cavalier, the Metro served as Chevrolet’s entry-level subcompact. It is chiefly known for modest dimensions, low running costs, straightforward engineering and strong fuel economy rather than performance or refinement. Production ended in 2001, and the Aveo later filled a similar role in Chevrolet’s North American line-up.
