About Chevrolet Malibu
The Chevrolet Malibu is a midsize passenger car whose name first appeared for 1964 as an upmarket version of the Chevrolet Chevelle. It became a standalone line for 1978, was discontinued after 1983, and returned for 1997 as a front-wheel-drive sedan. Across nine generations, the Malibu evolved from a traditional rear-wheel-drive family car offered as sedans, coupes, convertibles and station wagons into a modern four-door model.
Variations differed widely by era. Early ranges included Malibu SS performance models and Malibu Classic luxury-oriented versions. Later generations focused mainly on sedan buyers, while the 2004–2007 Malibu Maxx added a long-wheelbase hatchback body. Depending on model year, the range also included V6 engines, turbocharged four-cylinder engines, hybrid powertrains and trims such as LS, LT, Premier and the appearance-focused RS.
For much of its modern life, the Malibu occupied the mainstream midsize position in Chevrolet’s North American car lineup, below the larger Impala. It competed primarily as practical family and fleet transport, with an emphasis on cabin space, ride comfort, straightforward controls and reasonable fuel economy rather than sport-focused character.
The ninth and final generation arrived for the 2016 model year. The 2025 model year was the last, with production ending at GM’s Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas in November 2024.
