About Chevrolet Lumina
The Chevrolet Lumina was a mainstream mid-size car introduced for the 1990 model year as Chevrolet expanded its front-wheel-drive passenger-car range. In North America, it replaced the Celebrity and initially came as a four-door sedan or two-door coupe. Positioned below the larger Caprice, it targeted families, fleets and buyers seeking a roomy, conventional car.
North American production covered two generations. The first ran from 1990 to 1994 and included base, Euro and performance-oriented Z34 versions. For 1995, the redesigned second generation continued as a sedan, while the related coupe adopted the revived Monte Carlo name. V6 engines, comfortable cabins and everyday practicality defined the range. The Lumina also represented Chevrolet in NASCAR racing from 1989 through 1994. It was succeeded by the revived Impala, although fleet sales continued through the 2001 model year.
The name had a different role outside North America. From 1998, Chevrolet used Lumina for Australian-built, rear-wheel-drive Holden Commodore derivatives sold mainly in the Middle East and South Africa. These included V6 sedans, sportier S and V8-powered SS versions, plus market-specific coupe and utility variants. The name remained in use in some export markets until 2013.
