About Chevrolet Kodiak
The Chevrolet Kodiak was a range of conventional-cab commercial trucks produced from 1980 to 2009. Introduced as a heavier derivative of Chevrolet’s C/K truck family, it occupied the space between full-size pickups and larger heavy-duty highway trucks. Its primary role was to provide a durable, configurable platform for vocational and fleet use.
Three generations were built. The first was closely related to Chevrolet’s established medium-duty C-Series, while the second adopted a newer cab and chassis architecture for the 1990s. The third generation arrived for 2003 with redesigned cabs, updated chassis and a wider range of configurations. Model designations included C4500, C5500, C6500, C7500 and C8500, although availability varied by year and market.
Most Kodiaks were supplied as chassis cabs for specialist bodies. Common applications included box trucks, dump trucks, tow trucks, utility vehicles, emergency vehicles, buses and motorhomes. Regular-cab and crew-cab versions were offered, along with cutaway and cowled chassis for selected uses.
Gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, rear-wheel drive and factory four-wheel drive on certain later models gave the range broad working flexibility. The Kodiak is chiefly known for its strong commercial chassis, high load capacity and adaptability rather than passenger-focused refinement. Production ended in 2009 when General Motors withdrew from the medium-duty truck segment.
