About Chevrolet Cavalier
The Chevrolet Cavalier is a compact, front-wheel-drive car best known as one of Chevrolet’s mainstream North American models of the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. Introduced for the 1982 model year as the successor to the Monza, it used General Motors’ J-body architecture and occupied an affordable position below Chevrolet’s larger family cars.
Three North American generations were offered through the 2005 model year. Depending on the period, the range included four-door sedans, two-door coupes, hatchbacks, station wagons and convertibles. Most versions prioritised economical everyday transport, while variants such as the Z24 added sportier styling, upgraded suspension tuning and more powerful engines.
The Cavalier became a familiar commuter, first car and fleet vehicle. It was valued mainly for accessible pricing, straightforward controls, compact dimensions and widely available servicing rather than luxury or advanced technology. The Chevrolet Cobalt replaced it in the United States and Canada after 2005.
Chevrolet later revived the Cavalier name for separate China-built compact sedans. These models were sold in China and selected Latin American markets, including Mexico, with modern four-door bodywork and, in later Mexican versions, turbocharged power. They continued the nameplate’s role as a practical, value-focused passenger car rather than directly extending the original J-body line.
