About Chevrolet Calibra
The Chevrolet Calibra was a two-door sports coupé sold in selected South American markets, most notably Brazil. It was the regional Chevrolet-badged version of the Opel Calibra, a European model developed within General Motors. Brazilian sales ran from 1993 to 1995, with cars imported rather than locally manufactured.
Built on architecture related to the first-generation Vectra, the Calibra combined front-wheel drive and practical liftback access with a low, streamlined body. It was especially known for its aerodynamic styling; when the original model appeared, its drag coefficient was among the lowest achieved by a mass-produced car.
The Chevrolet version was offered primarily with a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre 16-valve petrol engine producing 150 cv. Unlike the wider international Calibra range, which included other engines and driveline layouts under different GM brands, the Chevrolet-badged offering remained relatively limited. It therefore represents a single generation rather than a long-running model family.
Within Chevrolet’s Brazilian range, the Calibra sat above conventional compact and midsize cars as a specialist sporting model. Its combination of distinctive design, Vectra-related engineering, useful rear hatch and comparatively accessible performance made it an unusual part of the brand’s 1990s line-up.
