About Chevrolet Astro
The Chevrolet Astro was a mid-size van produced for the 1985 through 2005 model years. It entered Chevrolet’s range as a smaller alternative to the brand’s full-size vans, while offering more cargo capacity and a more truck-like layout than many conventional minivans. Passenger and cargo versions served families, tradespeople, fleet operators and conversion-van buyers.
Two main generations were offered. The first covered 1985–1994 and was available in short and extended-length forms. The second, sold from 1995–2005, introduced revised front-end styling and continued only with the longer body. Equipment, trim and door arrangements varied by year, with passenger models providing multi-row seating and commercial versions prioritising enclosed load space.
Unlike most front-wheel-drive minivans, the Astro used a rear-wheel-drive configuration. All-wheel drive became available during the first generation, adding appeal in areas with difficult weather or for drivers needing extra traction. Early vehicles offered four-cylinder or V6 power, but the 4.3-litre V6 became the model’s defining engine.
The Astro is best known for combining manageable exterior dimensions with a spacious, versatile interior and useful towing capability. Its practical, truck-influenced design placed it between family minivans and full-size commercial vans within Chevrolet’s line-up.
