About Chevrolet Astra
The Chevrolet Astra was a compact family car derived from Opel’s Astra and sold under Chevrolet branding in parts of Latin America, especially Brazil. It occupied the medium-car class and largely assumed the market role previously held by the Kadett.
Brazil received two principal generations. The Astra F arrived in 1994 as a Belgian-built import, offered as a five-door hatchback and station wagon. After a short absence, the Astra G returned in 1998 with local production. It was available as three- and five-door hatchbacks and, from 1999, a four-door sedan. Production continued until 2011.
Versions varied by year and included GL, GLS, CD, Comfort, Elegance, Elite and Advantage, plus the sport-oriented Sport, GSi and SS. Brazilian models generally used 1.8- or 2.0-litre petrol engines, with flex-fuel units added later. The GSi was distinguished by a 2.0-litre 16-valve engine.
The Astra became known for practical passenger space, composed handling and strong performance for its class. Its mix of body styles and equipment levels suited both mainstream family-car buyers and drivers seeking a sportier specification. Its long production run made it an important part of Chevrolet’s Brazilian medium-car range.
