About Cadillac Sixty Special
The Cadillac Sixty Special name originated in 1938 and was historically applied to an exclusive, comfort-focused sedan positioned near the top of Cadillac’s range. Earlier rear-wheel-drive versions were known for formal styling, spacious interiors and Fleetwood associations. The designation was retired after 1976, then revived for 1987.
The revived Fleetwood Sixty Special was a four-door, front-wheel-drive luxury car. The 1987–1988 version used an extended GM C-body platform and was converted by coachbuilder Hess & Eisenhardt. Its longer wheelbase provided additional rear-seat space, distinguishing it from the regular Fleetwood and placing it between Cadillac’s standard luxury sedans and its formal limousines.
For 1989, the Sixty Special entered regular factory production and adopted the same wheelbase as the contemporary DeVille and Fleetwood. Its identity shifted from extra body length to upgraded equipment, including distinctive leather seating with extensive power adjustment. The range used Cadillac V8 engines, progressing from 4.1 litres to 4.5 and 4.9 litres during the revived production run.
In 1993, the Fleetwood name moved to Cadillac’s rear-wheel-drive flagship, leaving this front-wheel-drive sedan named simply Sixty Special. An Ultra package offered the specialised adjustable seating previously associated with the model. Production ended after 1993. The final Sixty Special is chiefly known as a richly equipped, traditional American luxury sedan focused on ride comfort, passenger space and interior convenience rather than sporting performance.
