About Cadillac Fleetwood
The Cadillac Fleetwood name came from Fleetwood Metal Body, a coachbuilder associated with General Motors and Cadillac. Cadillac used it for decades on prestigious body styles, series and trim levels before establishing the modern Fleetwood model range for 1985. It occupied the upper end of the brand’s passenger-car lineup and emphasised comfort, space and formal styling.
The 1985–1992 Fleetwood was based on Cadillac’s front-wheel-drive C-body architecture. It was closely related to the DeVille and offered mainly as a four-door sedan, although a coupe was available in selected years. Variations included the luxury-focused d’Elegance package, the extended-wheelbase Sixty Special and the Series 75, which served limousine and professional-car markets.
For 1993, the name moved to a substantially larger, body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive sedan that replaced the Cadillac Brougham as the brand’s traditional full-size luxury car. A Brougham package added more ornate exterior and interior details. Produced through 1996, this final version is known for its spacious cabin, soft ride, V8 power and imposing proportions. The Fleetwood was discontinued when General Motors ended production of its full-size rear-wheel-drive sedan platform, marking the close of Cadillac’s long-running traditional luxury-sedan format.
