About Cadillac DeVille
Cadillac DeVille was a full-size luxury car and a core Cadillac nameplate for much of the post-war era. The de Ville designation first appeared on the Series 62 in 1949 and became a separate model line for 1959. Its first four generations established the familiar formula of spacious coupe and sedan bodies, V8 power, a soft ride and formal American styling.
The fifth generation, sold from 1977 to 1984, kept rear-wheel drive but was substantially downsized as Cadillac adapted its large cars to new efficiency priorities. Coupe de Ville and Sedan de Ville remained the main body styles, joined by more richly trimmed d’Elegance versions.
For 1985, the sixth generation shifted to a smaller front-wheel-drive platform with a transverse V8. Coupes and sedans continued, while a major 1989 update restored a more substantial appearance. The seventh generation arrived for 1994 as a sedan only. Its range included the standard DeVille, luxury-focused d’Elegance and performance-oriented Concours, with Northstar V8 engines becoming a defining feature.
The eighth and final generation covered 2000–2005. Offered as the standard DeVille, comfort-focused DHS and sportier DTS, it remained a large front-wheel-drive sedan. Known for cabin space, relaxed cruising, V8 performance and extensive convenience technology, it held Cadillac’s traditional large-luxury position. The name was retired for 2006, when the line continued as the DTS.
