About Cadillac Cimarron

The Cadillac Cimarron was a compact four-door luxury sedan sold for the 1982–1988 model years. It was Cadillac’s first compact car, combining front-wheel drive and four-cylinder power with an available manual transmission at launch — a major departure from the brand’s traditional large V8 models.

Developed during General Motors’ early-1980s downsizing programme, the Cimarron used the J-body platform shared with the Chevrolet Cavalier, Buick Skyhawk, Oldsmobile Firenza and Pontiac J2000/Sunbird. Cadillac positioned it below the Seville as an entry-level model intended to meet growing demand for smaller European-style premium sedans.

The range covered one generation and one body style. Early cars used four-cylinder engines, while an optional 2.8-litre V6 arrived for 1985 and provided stronger performance. A facelift that year gave the car a more recognisably Cadillac appearance. The D’Oro package, offered from 1983 to 1986, added distinctive exterior and interior trim.

The Cimarron is best known for the contrast between its ambitious market position and its close similarity to less expensive GM models. Its compact size, generous equipment and improved later versions were notable, but limited visual and mechanical differentiation shaped its reputation. Production ended without a direct successor.
