About Cadillac Allanté
The Cadillac Allanté is a two-seat luxury roadster sold for the 1987 to 1993 model years. Offered in a single generation, it served as a distinctive flagship within Cadillac’s range and was positioned against premium European grand tourers. Its front-wheel-drive layout and V8 power gave it a different character from many traditional rear-wheel-drive rivals.
The model is especially known for its unusual international production process. Pininfarina designed and built the bodies in Italy, after which they were flown to the United States for final assembly. The clean Italian styling was combined with Cadillac equipment, including a power-operated soft top and an available removable hardtop.
Several mechanical updates marked the production run. Early cars used a 4.1-litre V8, followed by a more powerful 4.5-litre engine. The substantially revised 1993 version received Cadillac’s 4.6-litre, 32-valve Northstar V8, along with a new automatic transmission and upgraded suspension and steering systems. That final model year is generally regarded as the most technically developed variation.
With limited production, specialised construction and technology such as anti-lock brakes and traction control, the Allanté remains one of Cadillac’s most unusual modern classics. It represents the brand’s attempt to combine American luxury with European coachbuilding and roadster styling.
