About Buick VELITE 5
The Buick VELITE 5 is a compact five-door liftback developed for the Chinese market and produced by the SAIC-GM joint venture. Introduced in 2017, it was Buick’s first extended-range electric vehicle and an early member of the brand’s VELITE electrified range. The model was closely related to the second-generation Chevrolet Volt but received Buick-specific exterior details, interior finishes and market positioning.
Its plug-in hybrid system combines an 18.4 kWh battery, electric motors and a 1.5-litre petrol engine. The car is designed to operate primarily on electric power, with the engine supporting longer journeys after the usable battery charge is depleted. Front-wheel drive, a five-seat cabin and a liftback body give it the everyday practicality of a conventional compact passenger car.
The VELITE 5 was offered in one generation, with Urban and Style extended-range versions that mainly differed in equipment. It was sold only for a short period, with production ending in 2019 as Buick expanded its Chinese new-energy line with models such as the VELITE 6. Within the Buick range, the VELITE 5 served as a bridge between conventional hybrids and fully electric vehicles. It is chiefly known for electric-first driving, a long combined driving range and low official fuel consumption when regularly charged.
