About Buick Somerset
The Buick Somerset was a front-wheel-drive compact coupe sold for the 1985–1987 model years. It introduced Buick’s version of GM’s first-generation N-body platform, shared with the Oldsmobile Calais and Pontiac Grand Am. The car replaced the two-door Skylark in Buick’s compact range, combining aerodynamic styling with a comfort-focused Buick character.
For 1985, it was named Somerset Regal, linking the new coupe with Buick’s established personal-luxury range. The Regal suffix disappeared for 1986 and 1987, when the model was sold simply as Somerset. The related four-door N-body was marketed as the Skylark, so the Somerset remained coupe-only throughout its short production run. For 1988, Buick discontinued the Somerset name and brought the coupe under the Skylark badge.
The single generation was offered mainly in Custom and better-equipped Limited forms. A sport-oriented T-Type was available for 1986, adding firmer suspension tuning, distinctive exterior details and standard V6 power. Other versions used a 2.5-litre four-cylinder as the main engine, with a 3.0-litre V6 available depending on year and trim.
The Somerset sat above the smaller Skyhawk and below larger Buick models such as the Century and Regal. It is known for its digital instrument display, formal yet aerodynamic styling and role in Buick’s mid-1980s shift towards smaller front-wheel-drive cars.
