About Buick Skylark
The Buick Skylark is an American passenger-car nameplate used intermittently from 1953 to 1998. It debuted as a limited-production convertible created for Buick’s 50th anniversary and based on the premium Roadmaster. This early Skylark served as an image model, known for distinctive styling, extensive equipment and V8 power.
When the name returned in 1961, it joined Buick’s smaller-car range as an upscale version of the Special. During the 1960s and early 1970s, the Skylark developed from a compact into a mid-size line, offered mainly as coupes, sedans and convertibles. Gran Sport variants linked it with Buick’s performance cars, while regular versions provided traditional Buick comfort at a more accessible position below the brand’s larger models.
Revived again for 1975, the Skylark later moved from rear-wheel-drive to front-wheel-drive platforms as General Motors downsized its cars. Its final generations consisted mainly of compact coupes and sedans positioned near the entry point of the Buick range. Trim and performance designations included Custom, Limited, T-Type and GS in selected years.
Seven generations are generally recognised, although the Skylark changed considerably in size, engineering and market role. Early convertibles are valued as distinctive luxury models, 1960s and 1970s versions are associated with comfort and available performance, and later cars are known for practical front-wheel-drive packaging. The nameplate ended after the 1998 model year.
