About Buick Skyhawk
The Buick Skyhawk was a small passenger car produced in two distinct generations for the 1975–1980 and 1982–1989 model years. It occupied the lower end of Buick’s range, bringing the brand’s styling and comfort features to the subcompact and compact segments.
The first-generation Skyhawk was a rear-wheel-drive, two-door hatchback based on General Motors’ H-body platform. Closely related to the Chevrolet Monza, it was offered exclusively with Buick’s 3.8-litre V6. Its combination of compact dimensions, a practical liftback and six-cylinder power distinguished it from many economy-oriented small cars of the period. Variations included sport-themed packages such as the Road Hawk.
The name returned for 1982 on GM’s front-wheel-drive J-body platform. This second generation was more conventional and practical, with coupe, sedan, station wagon and, later, hatchback body styles. It shared its basic architecture with several other GM compact cars but received Buick-specific trim, equipment and styling details. Custom and Limited versions addressed mainstream buyers, while the T-Type added a sportier appearance, firmer suspension tuning and an available turbocharged four-cylinder engine in certain years.
The Skyhawk is mainly known as Buick’s small-car offering during a period when the brand was adapting to demand for lighter, more fuel-efficient vehicles. Its two generations differ substantially in layout and character, making the model name applicable to both a 1970s sporty hatchback and a broader 1980s compact-car range.
