About Buick Roadmaster
The Buick Roadmaster is a full-size luxury car spanning eight generations. The first seven were produced from 1936 to 1958, interrupted by the Second World War, and included sedans, coupes, convertibles and Estate wagons. In the post-war years, it generally ranked near the top of Buick’s range.
The eighth and final generation revived the name for 1991. It began with the Roadmaster Estate wagon, followed by a four-door sedan for 1992. Unlike Buick’s contemporary front-wheel-drive cars, it used GM’s body-on-frame B platform, rear-wheel drive, V8 power and an automatic transmission. As Buick’s largest passenger model, it offered a more traditional alternative to the Park Avenue.
Versions included the standard sedan, better-equipped Limited sedan and Estate wagon. The wagon was noted for its long roof, woodgrain-style trim and generous passenger and luggage space. From 1994, a 5.7-litre LT1-family V8 rated at 260 hp brought stronger performance while preserving the model’s relaxed cruising character.
Production ended after the 1996 model year as GM converted its Arlington plant for trucks and SUVs. The final Roadmaster is known for spacious seating, a soft ride, useful towing ability and effortless V8 performance, making it one of Buick’s last traditional rear-wheel-drive, body-on-frame cars.
