About Buick Regal
The Buick Regal is a mid-size passenger car that occupied the sportier side of Buick’s range. Introduced for 1973 as an upscale personal-luxury coupe, it later expanded into coupes and sedans, combining the brand’s traditional focus on comfort and refinement with a stronger performance character.
Across six generations, the Regal moved through several layouts and design approaches. Early versions used rear-wheel drive, while later models adopted front-wheel drive and shared General Motors platforms with other mid-size cars. The turbocharged Grand National and limited-production 1987 GNX became its best-known performance derivatives. GS versions continued the sporting theme in later generations.
After leaving the North American market following the 2004 model year, the Regal returned for 2011 with European roots and a close relationship to the Opel Insignia. Its final North American generation, sold from 2018 to 2020, included the five-door Sportback, the higher-riding TourX estate and the V6-powered GS Sportback. Available all-wheel drive and practical cargo access broadened its appeal.
The Regal is known for blending a composed ride, a comfortable cabin and understated styling with more responsive handling than many Buick models. It held a near-premium position between mainstream family cars and traditional luxury models. Although discontinued in North America after 2020, the Regal name has continued in China.
