About Buick Lucerne
The Buick Lucerne is a full-size, front-wheel-drive four-door sedan sold for the 2006–2011 model years. It replaced both the LeSabre and Park Avenue, consolidating Buick’s traditional large-car range into one model. Built at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant in Michigan, it shared its basic architecture and production site with the Cadillac DTS while maintaining a distinct Buick identity.
The Lucerne was produced in a single generation, with updates to its styling, equipment and powertrains during its run. Early versions were offered as CX, CXL and CXS. The CX was the value-oriented model, the CXL added more comfort and luxury equipment, and the CXS combined V8 power with a firmer chassis. The Super later became the range-topping version, while special-edition CXL variants were also offered.
V6 engines powered most Lucernes, including a 3.8-litre unit in earlier cars and a 3.9-litre engine in later models. Higher-specification CXS and Super versions used a 4.6-litre Northstar V8. All versions had automatic transmissions.
Within Buick’s lineup, the Lucerne sat above the LaCrosse as the brand’s largest and most prestigious sedan. It is known mainly for its spacious cabin, quiet ride and comfort-focused road manners. Available front bench seating allowed up to six occupants, an increasingly uncommon feature at the time. The model ended after 2011 as Buick centred its sedan range on the newer LaCrosse.
