About Buick LeSabre
The Buick LeSabre was a full-size passenger car produced for the 1959–2005 model years. It replaced the Special as Buick’s lower-priced full-size series and remained a core model for nearly five decades. Within the range, it generally sat below the more luxurious Electra and later Park Avenue, while offering more space and a traditional large-car character than Buick’s smaller models.
Across eight generations, the LeSabre changed substantially with the American car market. Early versions used rear-wheel drive, body-on-frame construction and mainly V8 engines. A downsized design arrived for 1977, while the 1986 redesign introduced front-wheel drive, unit-body construction and wider use of Buick V6 engines. The final generation, sold from 2000 to 2005, was a four-door sedan powered by the 3.8-litre 3800 Series II V6.
Body styles varied by era and included sedans, hardtop coupes, convertibles and station wagons. Later cars focused on the sedan format, commonly offered in Custom and Limited versions. The LeSabre is best known for spacious seating, a soft ride, straightforward controls and relaxed road manners. It represented Buick’s accessible approach to full-size comfort rather than a sporting or flagship model and was succeeded by the Lucerne.
