About Buick Electra
The Buick Electra was a full-size premium car produced from 1959 through 1990. Introduced near the top of Buick’s range as a successor to the Roadmaster, it served as the brand’s flagship sedan line for much of its life. It was positioned above mainstream Buick models, emphasising cabin space, comfort, quiet cruising and formal styling rather than sporting character.
Across six generations, the Electra appeared as four-door sedans and hardtops, two-door coupes and hardtops, convertibles and, during parts of its run, estate wagons. The best-known version was the Electra 225, whose name referred to the original car’s approximate 225-inch length. Other important designations included Custom, Limited and Park Avenue. Park Avenue became the most luxurious Electra variant before developing into a separate Buick model.
Early Electras used body-on-frame construction, rear-wheel drive and large V8 engines. A major 1977 redesign made the car shorter and lighter while retaining its full-size role. For 1985, the final generation moved to a smaller front-wheel-drive, unibody platform and relied mainly on V6 power, reflecting the industry’s shift towards more space-efficient luxury cars.
The Electra is known for generous passenger room, soft ride quality and extensive comfort equipment for its era. Its long production run illustrates Buick’s transition from traditional large American luxury cars to more compact premium sedans.
