About Buick Century

The Buick Century was produced across six generations, with breaks in the nameplate’s use. Early versions appeared from 1936 to 1942 and 1954 to 1958 as performance-oriented full-size cars. The third generation, introduced for 1973, repositioned the Century as a mid-size model.

The fourth generation covered the 1978–1981 model years. Part of General Motors’ downsized intermediate range, it retained rear-wheel drive and was offered in fastback coupe, sedan and station wagon forms. The uncommon Century Turbo Coupe added a turbocharged V6.

For 1982, the fifth generation moved to a smaller front-wheel-drive platform. Its long 1982–1996 run included coupes, sedans and wagons, with four-cylinder and V6 engines. Variations included Custom and Limited trims, Estate wagons and the sport-oriented T-Type coupe. This generation became known mainly as a practical, comfortable family car and remained in production as a lower-priced alternative to the Regal.

The sixth generation, sold for 1997–2005, was a front-wheel-drive sedan sharing its platform and much of its body design with the Regal. It occupied Buick’s value-focused, entry-level position, with softer suspension tuning, available six-passenger seating and Custom or Limited trim. The Century ended after the 2005 model year as Buick introduced the LaCrosse.
