About BMW Z8
The BMW Z8 is a two-seat, rear-wheel-drive roadster developed as a modern interpretation of the 1950s BMW 507. Previewed by the Z07 concept, it reached production around the turn of the millennium and carried the internal model code E52. Its long bonnet, short rear deck and driver-focused cabin combined traditional roadster proportions with contemporary engineering.
Built in Munich from 1999 to 2003, the Z8 was a low-volume flagship rather than a direct alternative to the more accessible Z3 or Z4. BMW produced 5,703 examples, making it one of the brand’s most exclusive modern series-production cars. The model existed as a single generation and was offered only as a roadster, with a folding soft top and removable hardtop.
The standard Z8 used an aluminium structure and a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 related to the engine in the contemporary BMW M5. It produced 400 PS and was paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. The limited BMW ALPINA Roadster V8 introduced a 4.8-litre V8, automatic transmission and comfort-oriented chassis tuning; 555 were built.
Known for its distinctive retro-modern design, strong V8 performance and rarity, the Z8 served as a halo model for BMW’s roadster range. Its appearance in the 1999 James Bond film The World Is Not Enough also helped establish its wider public profile.
