About BMW Z4
The BMW Z4 is a two-seat, rear-wheel-drive sports car that succeeded the Z3 in 2002. Positioned as BMW’s dedicated premium roadster, it combines an open-top body with a long bonnet, short rear deck and driver-focused layout. It sits apart from the brand’s larger four-seat convertibles through its smaller footprint and stronger emphasis on handling.
Three generations were produced. The first, known as E85, used a fabric roof and was joined by the fixed-roof E86 Coupé; high-performance Z4 M versions topped the range. The second-generation E89 arrived with a folding metal hardtop, combining roadster and coupé characteristics. The third-generation G29 returned to a fabric roof and was manufactured in Graz, Austria.
Depending on generation and market, the Z4 was offered with four- and six-cylinder petrol engines, including regular sDrive variants and the performance-oriented M40i. Automatic transmissions were common, while selected versions were available with a manual gearbox. Known for balanced proportions, responsive handling and everyday usability by sports-car standards, the Z4 competed in the compact premium roadster class. Production concluded in 2026 after a limited Final Edition.
