About BMW Z3
The BMW Z3 is a compact two-seat sports car produced from 1995 to 2002. Based on components from the contemporary 3 Series, it combined rear-wheel drive with traditional roadster proportions: a long bonnet, short rear deck and low seating position. It was the first BMW model produced entirely outside Germany, with all examples built at the company’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, United States.
The Z3 was offered in one generation. The soft-top Roadster formed the core of the range, while a fixed-roof Coupé joined it in 1998. Depending on year and market, engines included four-cylinder and inline six-cylinder petrol units. Higher-performance M Roadster and M Coupé variants added engines and chassis tuning developed by BMW M. A 1999 update brought revised styling, interior changes and an evolving engine range.
Positioned as an accessible, characterful sports car within BMW’s lineup, the Z3 helped re-establish the brand in the modern compact-roadster market. It is known for direct handling, distinctive styling and a relatively simple mechanical layout. The unusually shaped Coupé developed a particularly strong enthusiast following. Production totalled about 297,000 vehicles before the Z3 was succeeded by the BMW Z4 in 2002.
