About BMW Z1

The BMW Z1 is a two-seat, rear-wheel-drive roadster developed by BMW Technik as a showcase for new materials, structures and production methods. Presented in 1987, it entered limited production in Munich in 1988, with customer deliveries beginning in 1989. Production ended in June 1991 after exactly 8,000 cars.

It was built in one generation and did not offer the broad selection of engines or body styles found in later BMW Z models. The production car used a 2.5-litre inline-six engine producing 125 kW (170 hp), a five-speed manual gearbox and components derived from the contemporary 3 Series. Its low-volume, largely hand-built status placed it above BMW’s mainstream range as an exclusive image and technology model.

The Z1 is best known for its doors, which retract vertically into the high side sills and can remain lowered while driving. Other unusual features include a galvanised steel structure, plastic exterior panels and a specially formed underbody. The compact dimensions, low centre of gravity and balanced chassis give it a focused sports-car character.

As the first BMW Z model, the Z1 revived the brand’s two-seat roadster tradition and established a line later continued by other Z-series cars. Its rarity, unconventional engineering and single-generation production run have made it a distinctive modern BMW classic.
